Pepe's musical career started in the early 70's in Sweden with numerous
rock bands. They did various gigs
and demo tapes and also made to
local radio station play lists. In his first band, Network, Pepe
was a drummer.
In the mid 80's Pepe left music business
for a while and moved to northern Finland to become a sheep farmer.
Desiring to play music, he formed a rock band and named it
Shaman, in which he made his debut as a lead singer.
They played their own
material and did gigs around northern Finland. In the
90’s Pepe moved to Rovaniemi,
the capital of Lapland, and came into
contact with local musicians. At first he joined various jam sessions,
which led to Kickels Blues Band. They did gigs in local clubs for
around one year and then went to well
earned sleep. The turning point on Pepe’s musical career was when he was asked to join the already
famous rhythm n’
blues band Wristshakers. In 1995 Wristshakers
recorded their first self-financed album called Rhythm n’ Blues
Band.
What It Is from that album made it to Radio Mafia’s play
list, which was the most famous radio station in Finland
at the time. This was unprecedented for a blues band. It also made the band a wanted
act for all major festivals
all around Finland. Wristshakers has also
made some successful gigs in Norway, Russia and Sweden to name a few.
Wristshakers is ranked as one of the most powerful blues live acts in
Finland today.
A new musical page in Pepe’s career was turned when he formed
Astman Brothers 1996 with an old friend
guitarist Timo Rehtonen.
Astman Brothers is something different from anything else he’s
done before. Astman
Brothers represents rock n’ roll before rock
n’ roll. Music from from the 30’s – 40’s, you
can call it Happy Jazz.
Numerous Finnish rock musicians have played with
Astman Brothers such as Remu Aaltonen, the Finnish rock icon
and front man of
Hurriganes,
Dave Lindholm, Pelle Miljoona and so on. Astman Brothers
was born to bring joy
to the world and they have spread the message
all around Finland, Norway, Russia and Sweden ever since.
The motto of Astman Brothers is “It’s never too late to give up!”.
The latest project is Green Mac, which started as a tribute band to
Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac.
Nowadays they play other stuff too
such as Johnny Winter and Kenny Wayne Sheperd. Green Mac features
experienced musicians who have played in several other bands and Green
Mac has played gigs all-around
northern Finland.
Pepe has also done some other music related projects. He was asked to
play the main role of a musical
called Caramba! It was a story of a
musician who sold his soul to The Devil to become famous. Pepe had
no previous
acting experience so this was a real big challenge. To act in front of
a live audience for ten
evenings was an enriching experience.
The shows were sold out!
Soul music has always been close to Pepe’s heart. In 2003 Pepe
joined Hip To Be Band which mainly showcased
musicians from Norbotten
Big Band, a well appreciated big band in Sweden. He was a guest
vocalist along with
Veeti Kallio and Aki Sirkesalo. This was a great
chance for him to sing Sam&Dave and Wilson Pickett from
the bottom of his
heart.
Once upon a time, Pepe and actor Seppo Rintamäki had a child. They
called it Lust of Rock! Music unites
people, so therefore Pepe had this
ingenious idea to get various rock musicians of different genres to play
together
for one night. Seppo Rintamäki felt the same, so he added
a visual dimension to the idea. The Symphonic Rock
Big Band featured
of 70 musicians, drummers, guitarists, bass players, keyboardists, horn
blowers and not
to mention the vocalists. Two sold out nights in a row
at Lappia talo, at Easter 2004 proved that there was lots of Lust.
And the journey continues......
